Autobiography

Joshua DiPietro

I was born October 12th, 1986 in the city of Philadelphia. At the age of 5 years old I found that I like to draw. After winning an award for my artwork in the first grade I discovered that I was talented. At the age of 6 I started playing T-Ball until I was ready for baseball. I played baseball as a pitcher and outfielder up until high school. When I turned 14 I picked up a keyboard that had been sitting around my house collecting dust, and I would play it when I wasn’t doing anything else. Shortly after my friends and family noticed that I had potential after producing some creative catchy tunes of my own. I then took lessons for a couple of years at the Gibson Music and Arts School.


I attended John Story Jenks Middle School until the 8th grade. I then attended Roxborough High School for two years and graduated from Samuel S. Fels High School. Throughout my years of school education I was known for my talents. I played the piano in talent shows, won awards in art class, and was a valuable baseball player. In the middle of my high school years, I got caught up with the wrong people and began losing interest in what I was doing. It was so much of a distraction that it was causing me to forget who I was.


After I graduated I really didn’t know what I wanted to do in life. So in the meantime I worked in the restaurant business at Olive Garden for 5 years. Afterwards I worked in the pretzel factory for a year. After working for six years in these dead end jobs, I came to the conclusion that this wasn’t the life for me. I knew that whatever I was going to do in life was going to be with my hands because they never failed me. That’s when I sat down and really gave it some thought. In the midst of my thoughts I could remember someone telling me that if you can find something you love to do you will never work a day in your life. After my past working experiences I didn’t want to work at all.


I also thought about my dad who is a licensed cosmetologist who pursued a career in barbering. He never attended barber school, and didn’t know how to use clippers well. As a result he didn’t last long in the business. I made the mistake of letting him cut my hair before I started my first day back in school. He simply gave me the worst haircut of my life. I was so embarrassed to go to school the next day, and since that day I have cut my own hair. Even though in the beginning I made mistakes I knew that anything was better than what my dad did to me. That’s when I thought about the times when I cut my own hair and my little brothers hair and remembered how much fun it was and how good I was at it. It gave me the same feeling I had when I was drawing a picture. Finally, I told myself I would try barbering and do the best I can.


Soon after I planned my goals I began to attend Tri-City Barber School at the Berean Institute in July of 2011. I attended school as much as I could and did everything I could to enhance my skills. When I wasn’t in school I would either be studying or watching my barber tutorial DVDs that I purchased off the internet. I then began to notice my skills growing rapidly and stronger. Cutting hair in barber school made me feel like I was back in grade school in my favorite subject, art class, perfecting my craft. That’s when I felt like I was going in the right direction, utilizing my God-given talent.
